Villadarias background
Villadarias under Felipe V
Villadarias a general
Villadariasas during the Spanish Succession War
In 1702 an Anglo-Dutch army landed near Cadiz. Villadarias was able to force back this invasion with only the aid of some cavalry and the local militia and thereby gained a lot of praise and fame1. It was probably this success that induced Felipe V to order Villadarias to besiege Gibraltar. This assignment would prove very difficult because most of Villadarias' forces consisted of troops scraped together from all over the kingdom and the artillery support was rather minimal.
