From the start of his ascession Felipe's family in Spain was of course much smaller than the French royal family. Whereas his Bourbon grandfather had adult grandsons the still young Felipe V had only himself and his teenage wife Maria Louise of Savoy. As regards 'French' confidants they had the princesse d'Ursins, who had been appointed to watch over them, and a few others who were probably more loyal to his grandfather. As regards his subjects Felipe had to find his way amongst a court that can hardly be called loyal and amongst a population that would prove his loyalty to him.
The machinations at Felipe V's court make for a very interesting read. The principle actors were: Madame D'Ursins, Felipe V, and his wife Marie Louise.
